Washington Post Takes Note of Passing SADA Deadline

Last Tuesday, April 29th, the deadline for SADA implentation passed without SADA actually being implemented. I'm sure the administration was hoping that no one would notice -- that they would quietly be given more time to enact this piece of legislation.

Unfortunately for the administration, there was nothing quiet about the passing of this deadline. Leading Darfur advocacy groups issued a joint press release denouncing the administration's failure to abide by the timeline set out in the legislation. Activists like you sent over 1,000 faxes to the office Director Jim Nussle at Office of Management and Budget (OMB), asking him to ensure that the necessary regulations were amended by his office. And the Washington Post called out President Bush on Sunday for missing the deadline that he had signed off on back in December.

White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe told the Washington Post that the adminsitration is not trying to evade the law. "OMB is looking into issuing regulations in the near future. It is a complicated process that they want to make sure is done correctly," he said.

While they have yet to positively confirm they will made the needed regulations, OMB has noticed the media around the issue, and has told our advocacy team they hope to have something for us in the coming weeks.
