Apprehension over Gambari
On New Year’s Day, UN official Ibrahim Gambari officially acceded to the post of Joint African Union-United Nations Special Representative for Darfur. A lack of success during Mr. Gambari’s time as Special Representative to Burma has raised questions about his potential effectiveness as UNAMID JSR.
The New Republic magazine just published a short article highlighting Mr. Gambari’s lack of success in Burma, including the rise in political prisoners during his tenure, limited progress on democratization and a focus on Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy as the opposition standard bearer.
With GI-NET’s focus on Sudan and Burma, we will continue to track Mr. Gambari’s pronouncements to see whether he is more effective in working towards a peaceful and prosperous Sudan.
